Lokomaikaʻi Hawaiʻi Heritage Center
Guided by the mele and ʻike of our kūpuna, LHHC preserves the past to inspire the future.
Service Description
Lokomaikaʻi Hawaiʻi Heritage Center is a community-rooted cultural space dedicated to preserving and sharing the ʻike (knowledge) and values of Hawaiʻi’s past. It is not just curated by institutions, but by the community itself—guided by the wisdom of kūpuna (elders), cultural practitioners, and generational stories that ensure authenticity and continuity. The center weaves together historical artifacts, oral histories, and lived experiences, grounding its exhibits in ʻike passed down through time. Mele (songs and chants) play a central role, serving as both historical record and spiritual guide—carrying lessons, place-based knowledge, and ʻike that inform how the community moves forward. In this way, the center becomes a living archive—where the voices of the past actively shape the future through culture, memory, and shared kuleana.
