About the event
Hawai'i's Royalty were prolific writers. Nā Lani ʻEhā, The Four Heavenly Chiefs King - Kalākaua, Queen Liliʻuokalanai, Princess Likelike, and Prince Leleiohoku were siblings. Their love for their people and home compelled them to write mele, poetry. Queen Emma was so beloved by the people, they wrote to honor her. He Lei No Emalani is a collection of poetry dedicated to her. Whether written by our Royals or for them, we continue celebrating them through mele.
Kuuipo Kumukahi, multi Nā Hoku Hanohano award winning singer, songwriter, and musician, recorded an album in 2007 dedicated to these royals entitled Nā Lani ʻEhā. Today, Kuuipo is the Director of Hawaiian Culture and Community Relations at the Hyatt Regency Waikīkī Beach Resort and Spa.
Nā Mele Aliʻi, Songs of our Royals highlights the songs and stories of our Aliʻi. This intimate engagement has limited seating and is open to the public.
